Big Crowd Supports Frogs in Home Opener

FORT WORTH, Texas -- With the track record the Horned Frogs have in attendance at home soccer matches, TCU soccer coach Eric Bell wasn't surprised by the 1,785 fans who showed for Friday's home opener with Missouri.

"I didn't expect anything different. The atmosphere was electric and we were happy to be back home," said Bell, whose team opened the season with road contests at Washington State and the University of Idaho.

For the last two seasons, the Frogs have led the Big 12 Conference in attendance at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, and with a crowd just south of 2,000, which was the Frogs' second-highest home-opening attendance figure since 2010, TCU is hoping to make it three.

Friday night, the Frogs relied on the crowd to help them get back in the game. Missouri scored the first goal of the game nearly 10 minutes into the second half, and 15 minutes later the Frogs tallied the equalizer with a goal by Jill Finnerty on a penalty kick.

"I think they gave us a lot of energy," Bell said. "It was awesome to have them chanting and pushing us forward as we tried to get back into the game in the second half."

The Frogs (1-2-0) eventually fell to the Tigers (1-1-1) on a Missouri golden goal less than two minutes into overtime.

"I anticipated that we would have a nice crowd but it was off and beyond what I thought it was going to be," Bell said. "Most of them stayed around for the second half and the overtime period. Hats off to the people that came to the field to support us."

It's nothing new, though.

The Frogs have averaged more than 1,000 per game for the last eight years. Last year, TCU averaged 1,301, while in 2012, the Frogs averaged 1,413 fans, which led the Big 12 and was eighth nationally. In the last four seasons, the Frogs have had seven of their best 10 crowds in school history.

The Frogs are back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host the University of Central Florida.
