Beach: TCU spilts with FIU, ULM

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Horned Frog Challenge Sunday to wrap up the opening weekend with a 3-1 record.
The 13th-ranked Horned Frogs won a 5-0 decision over ULM and dropped a 4-1 match to No. 11 FIU. On Saturday, the Frogs beat Houston Baptist and Texas A&M Kingsville.
For the third consecutive season, the Horned Frogs have opened the year 3-1.
"Even though we lost, the girls competed. In the end, it's the small details that make the difference," TCU beach coach Hector Gutierrez said. "I am happy with the way we competed, and I think we got better as a team today."
For the weekend, Haven Hill and Cassie House combined to go 3-1 as did Jillian Bergeson and Jaelyn Greene, and Avery Arellano and Jensyn Bledsoe. Brooke Sassin and Jordan Westendorff went 2-1, while Hannah Rogers and Molly Scheel posted a 2-2 mark.
Against ULM, Claire Doyle and Westendorff showed some moxie after dropping their first set 16-21, they bounced back and beat Holland Ponthieux and Taylor Meyer 21-12, 15-8. The other four TCU teams won in two sets.
In the set narrow setback to FIU, the Horned Frogs dropped two three-set matches with House/Hill (17-21, 21-16, 18-16) and Bledsoe/Arellano (21-18, 16-21, 15-11), while Greene/Bergeson (21-11, 20-22, 15-11) held on to win in three.
The Horned Frogs are back in action Saturday and Sunday when they host No. 18 Tulane (11 a.m.) and No. 14 Cal Poly (3 p.m. on Saturday, and Arizona State (12 p.m.) on Sunday in the Fight in the Fort in the final home meet of the season.
