TCU Splits with No. 12 GCU, UNM
March 4, 2017
PHOENIX -- The TCU beach volleyball team wrapped up a successful season-opening weekend at the Grand Canyon Beach Tournament by going 3-1.
After beating Colorado Mesa and Loyola Marymount on Day One Friday, the Horned Frogs went 1-1 in dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 12 Grand Canyon before bouncing back to beat New Mexico 3-2 on the final day Saturday at the Grand Canyon Beach Stadium.
"We were looking forward to playing and the girls really competed," TCU beach coach Hector Gutierrez said. "We were a little disappointed we lost this morning to Grand Canyon, but we had a chance to win it. We had a few mistakes near the end."
Gutierrez was happy with how the Horned Frogs bounced back against New Mexico after dropping the close match to the nationally ranked Antelopes.
"They have some physical players and they put us in some hard positions," Gutierrez said of the Lobos. "We had a little more pressure on us and we won. We're happy overall with the weekend, but we need to keep working."
With the win over the UNM, the Horned Frogs improve to 2-0 overall against the Lobos.
TCU (3-1) will have 10 days off before beginning a five-day, six-match road trip to California beginning March 14 at Long Beach State. While there, the Horned Frogs will also compete in the Cal Poly Tournament with Benedictine and Cal Poly before finishing off the trip at the Pepperdine Tournament where they will compete with host Pepperdine, Arizona State and Cal State Los Angeles.
