MALIBU, Calif. -- For the second time in as many matches, the TCU beach volleyball team knocked off a ranked opponent in holding off No. 10 Arizona State 3-2 Saturday in the first of three matches at the Zuma Classic at Pepperdine.

"We're moving in the right direction," TCU beach coach Hector Gutierrez said. "All of them are playing well and understanding what it takes and believing in the process. We're happy. It was a great week for us."

The Horned Frogs (7-3), who beat No. 15 Cal Poly 3-2 Thursday night at Pismo Beach, Calif., got wins by Ariah Palter and Sarita Mikals (21-13, 21-16) over Katie Cross and Kaetlyn Carballo, and Claire Doyle and Shane Peters (21-19, 21-17) over Bethany Wedepohl and Sydney Palmer before Avery Arellano and Jillian Bergeson closed out the nationally ranked Sun Devils with a 21-17, 21-15 win over Cassidy Pickrell and Ellyson Lundberg.

"We have seen them progress, but we still have a long way to go," Gutierrez said. "We are still learning. All in all we are improving. We are working hard and believing in each other."

The Horned Frogs followed the win with a 5-0 decision over Cal State Los Angeles before closing out the three-match day with a 5-0 loss to No. 2 Pepperdine.

Against Cal State Los Angeles, Amy Neal and Jaelyn Greene beat CSLA's Iona Lofano and Lauren Gomez (21-14, 21-10); Molly Scheel and Haven Hill dispatched Alma Serna and Kelsey Molnar (21-7, 21-13); Arellano and Bergeson beat Cynthia Giron and JamieAnn Hero (21-8, 21-6); Palter and Mikals defeated Daisia LaBrie and Taylor Kushner (21-6, 21-8); and Claire Doyle and Shane Peters beat Sifa Faaiu and Caitlyn Bato (21-17, 21-11).

TCU finished the five-day, six-match California swing 4-2 with its other loss coming to Long Beach State Tuesday.

"We started the week pretty bad, to be honest. We didn't compete or play our best," Gutierrez said. "After that, we had a little chat and the girls realized they had to be tougher."

Following the loss to LBSU, the Frogs defeated Benedictine University and Cal Poly Thursday before closing out the week 2-1 at Pepperdine.
