Horned Frogs go 2-1 in Irvine

IIRVINE, Calif. -- After playing three matches against three ranked teams in two days in the Horned Frog Challenge in Fort Worth Friday and Saturday, the TCU beach volleyball team took to the road Sunday for the Shave Ice Invitational hosted by Irvine Valley College and went 2-1 on the day.

The Horned Frogs snapped a four-match losing streak in the first of three matches Sunday with a 4-1 win over No. 19 Stanford. After a 5-0 loss to No. 5 Hawaii, the Horned Frogs bounced back and beat Irvine Valley College 4-0 to close out the one-day event.

With the wins, the Horned Frogs improve to 9-7 on the season. They are back in action Friday at Saturday at the ULM Bayou Beach Bash in Monroe, La. TCU opens first-day action with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist before closing out the tournament the following day with Central Arkansas and Louisiana-Monroe.

In the Shave Ice Invitational opener against Stanford, the Horned Frogs went three sets in four of the five matches to upend the Cardinal.

Amy Neal and Jaeyln Green dropped the first set 20-22 to Ivana Vanjak and Payton Chang, but they bounced back and won 21-19 and 15-11. Ariah Palter and Sarita Mikals won the first set 21-11 over Catherine Raquel and Shannon Richardson and dropped the second set (16-21) before winning 15-9 in the third.

Jillian Bergeson and Shane Peters fell in the first set 19-21 to Morgan Hentz and Michaela Keefe, but rallied to win 21-11 in the second and 22-20 in the third. Claire Doyle teamed up with Bridget Odmark and won the first set against Courtney Bowen and Kat Anderson 21-10. After falling 19-21 in the second set, the TCU duo rallied and won the third set 15-9.

Against nationally ranked Hawaii, Neal and Greene needed three sets to pick up the Horned Frogs' only win in the match over Nikki Taylor and Kaiwi Schucht 15-21, 21-19, 16-14.

Neal/Greene finished 3-0 on the day in beating IVC's Lucee Fitzgerald and Taira Kaawaloa 21-11, 21-10. Arellano and Haven Hill teamed up for a 21-10, 21-17 win over Ally Saasman and Brittany Tuliau. Bergeson/Peters beat Alissa Blevins 21-11, 21-19 and Doyle/Odmark defeated Hannah Holder and Jacqueline Miller 21-11, 21-10.
