TCU Debuts at No. 13 in AVCA Coaches Poll

April 10, 2017

FORT WORTH, Texas -- For the first time in school history, the TCU beach volleyball team is ranked in the AVCA Coaches poll.

When the poll was released Monday, the Horned Frogs (16-8) checked in at No. 13.

"We're really excited and happy about the ranking, and it is good for our program," TCU beach coach Hector Gutierrez said. "At the end of the day, I am happy for the girls because they have been working hard and playing hard to get to this point."

The Horned Frogs made a great case for moving into the Top 15 at the Staybridge Suites Invitational in Florida over the weekend where they beat No. 10 Georgia State (3-2), No. 13 Florida International (3-2) and No. 14 Florida Atlantic (3-2).

"We were ready to compete against those teams," Gutierrez said. "We have been working for that all season. It was great timing. The girls were mentally and physically ready to play. It was great for us to show that we can compete against some of the best teams in the country."

For the season, the Horned Frogs have a total of five wins over ranked teams. In March, they beat Arizona State and Cal Poly, who were 10th and 15th at the time, respectively.

TCU debuted in the rankings over Florida International (14th) and Florida Atlantic (15th).

The Horned Frogs, who have won eight of their last nine matches, will close out the regular season April 22 when they travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a meeting with TAMU-CC and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The National Championships are slated for May 5-7 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
