Beach: Gutierrez signs 5 in 2018 class

Nov. 10, 2017

FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU beach volleyball coach Hector Gutierrez announced Friday the addition of five players to the 2018 signing class. Four of the five signees in his second signing class with the Horned Frogs are freshmen and one is a graduate transfer.

“Every year, our signing classes are getting better,” Gutierrez said. “The new players have more experience on the beach than the past classes, so each year is getting more competitive just for the fact they are playing beach volleyball only.”

The Horned Frogs inked New Mexico graduate transfer Cassie House; Hayley Boll; Victoria McDonald; Emily Napoli; and Caroline White. House and McDonald will enroll in school in January.

“I’m hoping this class is going to raise our level of play because we are adding to the beach experience we already have,” Gutierrez said. “These girls coming in are hungry and strong, and they have a lot of good skills. They will push the others to play better as well.”

Cassie House, Rio Rancho, New Mexico

Finished the season with a 17-10 record, playing 22 matches in the No. 1 position and five in the No. 2 slot at the University of New Mexico … Logged a 5-0 record playing in the 2's, going 12-10 in the 1's ... Picked up a marquee win over No. 9/12 Arizona State's No. 1 duo, winning 21-19, 21-19 in Tempe … played four seasons of indoor at New Mexico.

Gutierrez on House:

“She brings experience and physicality. She is 6-3 and is really strong. She is going to have a really important role with the team because we need to use her physicality and potential as a blocker.”

Hayley Boll, Aledo, Texas

Placed second in 3A Zone 18U at the Border Zone Championship in Lewisville, Texas, in late June … placed fourth in 4A Local 18U at the Mid-South Grand Slam in early June in Lewisville … won the 4B Local 16U championship at the SSOVA in Clearwater, Florida, on Oct. 6, 2016 … in 2016, had six top-five finishes in USA Volleyball Beach stops.

Gutierrez on Boll:

“She’s a blocker and a defender, so she’ll bring experience in both, and she’ll help the team in whatever situation we need her. She’s really athletic and her work ethic is amazing.”

Emily Napoli, Encinitas, California

Won the JBT Hermosa Beach 16U division on Dec. 12, 2015m and Sept. 26, 2015 … took the Open/Golf 16U division at CBVA Ocean Beach on Aug. 23, 2015, and June 7, 2015 … Finished in the top five in all seven tournaments she played in in 2015, including six top-three finishes.

Gutierrez on Napoli

“She has a lot of experience on the beach and she’s fast and is a strong defender and has a good jump serve. Spending this semester in Europe practicing with the Italian Junior National Team is going to help her a lot.”

Victoria McDonald, Carlsbad, California

Played in a pair of USA Volleyball events and won the JBT 4A Local 16U title in Hermosa Beach, California, on April 30, 2017 … She placed 25th in the JBT 4A Local 18U in Hermosa Beach on March 25, 2017.

Gutierrez on McDonald

“She is going to be a blocker with her physically and experience because she has been playing beach only for the last three years. With her getting here earlier (in January) it will give her a semester to practice with the team and then compete in 2019.”

Caroline White, Paradise Valley, Arizona

Won the JBT 18U in Las Vegas on June 10, 2017, and the JBT 18U in Gilbert, Arizona, on Jan. 21, 2017 … won the AVP First Memorial Cup in Gilbert, Arizona, on May 27-29, 2017 … won the AVP First Presidential Cup in Gilbert, on Feb. 18-20, 2017 … had one JBT 16U victory in 2016 and three third-place finishes.

Gutierrez on White:

“She dropped high school indoor volleyball and club and had been concentrating on beach. She is the most physical player we have in this class and we’re expecting great things from her.”
