Beach: Gutierrez releases 2018 Schedule

Nov. 29, 2017

FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU beach volleyball coach Hector Gutierrez released the Horned Frogs’ 2018 schedule Wednesday and it features matches with 13 teams that finished in the Top 15 last season.

“I think it’s going to be a challenge for us,” Gutierrez said. “We’ve had more time to put our schedule together this year and we tried to get better competition to give us a chance to go to the national championships.”

The Horned Frogs, who finished 18-8 and ranked No. 13 in the final AVCA poll last season, will have three homes meets — including the Purple & White scrimmage — to open the 2018 season.

“We only had one home meet last year, and I’m happy with the quality of the teams coming this year,” Gutierrez said. “We need to play and challenge ourselves. We know what it takes and the girls are ready and they want to compete with the best possible teams.”

Fans will get their first look at the Horned Frogs at the Purple & White scrimmage set for Feb. 17. The Frogs will host ULM, Houston Baptist, Florida International and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Feb. 24-25 to officially open the season before welcoming Cal Poly, Tulane and Arizona State March 3-4.

TCU will then play the remainder of the season on the road beginning March 10-11 in Los Angeles where the Frogs will face Hawaii, three-time defending champion USC, national runner-up Pepperdine and host UCLA. Hawaii and UCLA also finished in the top five last year.

The weeklong trip to California continues March 15 when the Frogs face Long Beach State and Loyola-Marymount at Long Beach, and two days later they will battle Cal Poly and Arizona in San Luis Obispo.

The Frogs will then travel to the opposite coast and meet South Carolina, Florida Gulf Coast, UAB and UNC-Wilmington March 24-25 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Following the meet in South Carolina, the Horned Frogs will spend the next two weekends in the state of Florida beginning with a tournament in South Beach with South Carolina, Florida State and Georgia State on March 30 and Florida Atlantic and Tulane on March 31.

On April 6-7, TCU travels to Tallahassee for match-ups with Georgia State, UAB, Florida Atlantic, UNC-Wilmington and Florida State.

The Horned Frogs will close out the regular season a little closer to home when they compete in the Battle on the Bayou in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they will meet host LSU, Florida State, Georgia State, New Orleans and Jacksonville State.

The national championships are scheduled for the first weekend in May in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
