TCU Wins Second-Straight C-USA Men's Swimming Invitational; Women Place Third in League Championships
Feb. 25, 2003
INDIANAPOLIS - For the second-straight year, the TCU men's swimming and diving team will bring home the Conference USA Men's Invitational title, as the Horned Frogs totaled 906 points to win the meet. In the league's women's championships, despite TCU's second-straight one-two finish in the backstroke, the Frogs were unable to overcome wire-to-wire leader East Carolina and finished third for the second year in a row.
Leading the men to victory was backstroker Craig Chapman (San Antonio, Texas/Robert E. Lee). The sophomore completed his sweep of the meet's backstroke events on Tuesday, as he took the 200 back in 1:45.56, breaking his own school record of 1:46.99 in the process. Chapman, who also won Monday's 100-yard backstroke, achieved NCAA B-cut times in both events. He will wait and see if his marks will qualify him for the NCAA Championships.
Rounding out the TCU men's triumphs was Aaron McLachlan (Arvada, Colo./Pomona), who won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:50.23. In all, the Frogs' 906 points were a whopping 182.5 more than second-place East Carolina. Rounding out the men's field were Cincinnati (713 pts.), Louisville (445.5) and Saint Louis (388).
On the women's side, TCU closed out its domination of the backstroke events in Indy with sophomores Aimee Moreau (Kenner, La./St. Martin's Episcopal) and Tiffany Strawn (Katy, Texas/James E. Taylor) placing one-two in the 200 back, just as they had in the 100 on Monday. Moreau won her second league title in 2:01.67, while Strawn placed second in 2:03.71.
Junior Erin Irons (Midland, Texas/Midland) also won her second individual championship and third overall title of the meet, blowing past the 100-yard freestyle field in :51.98.
"I am very proud of both of our teams," TCU head coach Richard Sybesma said. "I think that our performances - from the men defending their Invitational title to the women fighting back from a tough first day to finish within 70 points of the championship - says a lot about our student-athletes. We are all excited about the present and future of Horned Frog swimming and diving."
