FORT WORTH – The TCU women’s tennis team opened the season Sunday with a 6-1 win over Nicholls State on a sunny and cool day at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

No. 35-ranked TCU moved to 1-0 with the win, while Nicholls State dropped to 0-2. With the win, TCU won its season opener for the third-straight year.

The Horned Frogs took two of the three doubles matches to open the match when Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram got things going with a quick 8-1 win over Rachel Howie and Emma Pitre at No. 2 doubles.

Gabi Barbosa and Simona Parajova followed with an 8-5 win over Marie Aubert and Isla Brock at No. 3 doubles to put TCU ahead 1-0 in the match. Barbosa and Parajova won four of the last five games after falling behind early.

TCU jumped out to a fast start in singles, winning first sets on five of the six courts. Millie Nichols was the first Frog to finish, picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Pitre at No. 5 singles to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.

Olivia Smith, slated at No. 3 in the singles lineup, followed with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Howie to push the Frog advantage to 3-0. Denti clinched the win for TCU when she finished off Brock, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

After the match was clinched for TCU, Stefanie Tan picked up a solid win over No. 119 Parija Maloo at No. 1 singles. Tan fought off four set points in a second-set tiebreaker for a 6-1, 7-6 (7) win.

At No. 2 singles, Parajova chipped in a 6-4, 7-5 win over Natalia Cardiff immediately following the conclusion of Tan’s match to polish off the 6-1 victory.

TCU returns to action Jan. 27 when Sam Houston State visits the Friedman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
