Women's Tennis Team Falls at No. 6 USC, 6-1

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 56 TCU women's tennis team (0-1, 0-0 C-USA) opened its spring season at sixth-ranked Southern California (1-0) with a 6-1 loss to the Women of Troy. The Frogs captured the doubles point, then battled three singles matches to full sets.
TCU swept doubles action with wins at No. 1 by senior Paty Aburto and junior Karla Mancinas over Carine Vermeulen and Dianne Matias, 8-6, and in the second position by the tandem of junior Saber Pierce and freshman Ana Cetnik against Melissa Esmero and Judy DeVera, 8-4. Junior Paige Brown and freshman Jenn Chay completed the sweep with their 8-4 victory over Anca Anastasiu and Erica Sauer at the three doubles.
In singles action, the Frogs battled at three positions to three sets. Chay took 70th-ranked Vermeulen at No. 1 the distance, but fell short, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. At the three singles, DeVera had to battle Cetnik in a tiebreaker to win 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 (10-5). In the sixth position, Esmero defeated Mancinas, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

The Frogs will play at 20th-ranked Fresno State on Sunday, January 25. They will conclude their California road trip with a match against the 2003 NCAA runner-up Stanford Cardinal on Monday, January 26. The Frogs' first home match comes Tuesday, February 10 against metroplex-foe SMU. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.
