FORT WORTH, Texas – A third set tiebreaker won by Simona Parajova sealed a 4-0 win for the No. 30 TCU women’s tennis team over No. 38 UC Irvine in the opening round of the ITA National Kick-Off in Los Angeles, Calif., Friday morning. After securing the doubles point and two singles points for a 3-0 lead over the Anteaters (0-1, 0-0 Big West), the Horned Frogs (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) got the fourth and final point for the match victory with the win at the No. 2 singles spot. Parajova easily won the first set over Franz Goettsching 6-1, but Goettsching battled back to win the second set 6-3 to send the match into the super tiebreaker third set. The junior from Slovakia did not let the match slip away and won the tiebreaker 10-3 to keep her undefeated singles record for the 2014 spring season intact. “UC Irvine is a good team with some good players and we played so tight in doubles, but we were able to overcome that which is a good sign that you can still win matches even when you are a little tight,” coach Dave Borelli said. “In singles, we played really well and we are now up against a really good UCLA team tomorrow. The girls have all beaten someone better then who they are going up against tomorrow sometime in their lives and this presents a great opportunity for us to play UCLA at their place.” TCU began the match with the newcomer combo of Mimi Fotopoulos and Sofiko Kadzhaya pairing up to take a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Kat Facey and Brooke Schweyer. The other two doubles matches were closely contested as Parajova and Stefanie Tan had to fight off multiple match points at No. 2 doubles, before Millie Nichols and Seda Arantekin got a 7-6 (3) win at the No. 1 position over Ali Facey and Goettsching. No. 30 Tan had an easier time at the No. 1 singles position and scored the second point for TCU with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Marivick Mamiit. Nichols notched the third point for the Horned Frogs with a 6-3, 6-2 win over A. Facey, before Parajova finished off the match with her win. TCU moves on to face No. 5 UCLA tomorrow at 5 p.m., CST at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The winner of the match will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championship at Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., on Feb. 7-10.
