Women's Tennis Falls to No. 5 UCLA
Jan. 25, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas (January 25, 2014) - The No. 30 TCU women's tennis team's bid to the ITA Indoor National Championships fell short on Saturday as the team suffered its first loss of the season to No. 5 UCLA, 4-1, in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Horned Frogs (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) fought hard, but could not overcome the Bruins (3-0, 0-0 Pac 12) in the second round of the ITA National Kick-Off.
"In doubles, I was disappointed. We had opportunities to win the doubles point and we had a lot of chances in the No. 2 position, but we just didn't win the big points. We didn't play well on big points and that was the difference between us and a team that is ranked top five in the nation," coach Dave Borelli said.
"In singles, a couple of the kids played really well at different times in the match, but it was the same thing - missed opportunities. This is a lesson learned and we walked away from this with a lot of experience and I think this is something we will build on."
UCLA got the upper hand early, as the No.1 doubles team in the nation of Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady handed Seda Arantekin and Millie Nichols their first loss of the season with a 6-2 win. TCU fought hard in the other two doubles match, but Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips broke Simona Parajova and Stefanie Tan to take a 7-5 win and clinch the doubles point.
The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the match, as No. 26 Brady defeated Mimi Fotopoulos 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. TCU got its only point of the match from Arantekin, who claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. UCLA finished off the match with wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions to claim the win.
TCU will continue their 2014 season by traveling to DePaul, Purdue and Illinois for matches on Jan. 31-Feb. 2. The Horned Frogs will first face the Blue Devils on Friday in Chicago, Ill., before traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., to face the Boilermakers. The team will wrap up the trip by heading to Champaign, Ill., to face to Illini.
