FORT WORTH – TCU’s women’s tennis team picked up a 4-3 win Sunday over Sam Houston State at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
With the win, the No. 37-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 2-0 on the year, while SHSU slipped to 0-2. TCU has won all three of the meetings between the two programs all-time.
“I thought we played really well in the doubles,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “A couple of the kids struggled in the singles and I was surprised but it’s a long year and we’ll keep getting better. The positive was in the doubles. I was very happy with that. Sam Houston State played well in the singles, so you’ve got to give them credit.”
TCU got things going with a sweep of the doubles matches, as Gabi Barbosa and Simona Parajova were first to win, dropped Imke Jagau and Kayla Stevenson, 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Sheridan Currie and Natalie Petaia.
With the point clinched, TCU’s top tandem of Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith added an exclamation point, scoring an 8-4 win at the expense of SHSU’s Nadia Dubyanskaya and Tanya Postnikova.
Parajova quickly made it 2-0 in favor of the Frogs with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jagau at No. 1 singles. Smith followed suit to push the TCU lead to 3-0 with her 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Petaia at the third singles court.
After SHSU got on the board, Nichols put the match away for TCU with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Maddie Mortimore at No. 4 singles. SHSU’s remaining two wins came with the match already clinched for the Frogs.
TCU returns to action Feb. 1 when Old Dominion visits the Friedman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
