TCU Falters Against Illinois
Feb. 2, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas (February 2. 2014) - Playing without three of their top four players due to injuries, the No. 25 TCU women's tennis team fell 5-1 to No. 42 Illinois on Sunday in Urbana, Ill.
The Horned Frogs (3-4, 0-0 Big 12) were led by Mimi Fotopoulos against the Illini (4-1, 0-0 Big 10), who posted her first win at the No. 1 singles position with a 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 victory over Melissa Kopinski.
"It hurt us that we could not play three of our top four players today in singles action," coach Dave Borelli said. "Mimi played really well and won at No.1 and she was the one positive thing today along with Tatum (Nowlin). Tatum had several set points in the second set to win her set and the inexperience cost her, but she played real well. Those were the two bright spots and we just have to get healthy now. We have to get ready for this middle part of the season and just try to pick up the pieces and go from there."
TCU had to play without senior Millie Nichols in doubles action, as Fotopoulos and Sofiko Kadzhaya moved to court one for doubles, while Seda Arantekin paired with Nowlin on court three. The Frogs could not overcome Illinois and ultimately lost the doubles point.
In singles action, TCU battled but the Illini took four of the first five first sets to take a strong lead in the match. Fotopoulos got the Frogs on the board with her win at No. 1, but the team could not get over the hump and dropped the other four singles matches.
TCU will next be in action on Sunday, Feb. 16 as the Frogs host Memphis at noon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
