Women's Tennis Tops SMU, 4-3

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team earned its first win of 2004 in a marathon match versus SMU lasting nearly five hours on Tuesday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Frogs go to 1-3 on the season, while the Mustangs fall to 2-3.
The No. 2 TCU doubles team of senior Saber Pierce and freshman Ana Cetnik handily defeated Jenny Langer and Allison Leuszler, 8-3, to begin the afternoon. SMU's Nadia Vaughan and Lynsie Jones topped junior Paige Brown and freshman Jenn Chay by an 8-5 count at the third spot. Senior Paty Aburto and junior Karla Mancinas pushed Svetlana Kouzmenko and Kit Carson in to a tiebreaker, but fell short giving SMU the doubles point to start play.
Pierce made short work of Jones at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-0), while Aburto put Langer away 6-1, 6-3 at two singles. At No. 5, Mancinas gave the Frogs their third point of the afternoon with her straight set 6-4, 6-3 win over Leuszler. Cetnik bounced back from a 1-6 first-set loss to take Carson the distance, but fell in three (6-1, 3-6, 6-1) at No. 3. Sophomore Gloriann Lopez clinched the match for TCU with her three-set victory over Vaughan (3-6, 7-5, 6-2). The match at No. 1 between Chay and Kouzmenko was a long haul, featuring a 16-14 tiebreaker in the first set and a 7-5 set to end the match.

The Frogs head back out on the road as they travel to New Orleans to take on Conference USA foe Tulane on Sunday, February 15 at noon. TCU's next home match is February 27 versus Oklahoma beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Friedman Tennis Center.
