TCU Drops Battle With Memphis
Feb. 16, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 40 TCU women’s tennis team lost a close 4-3 battle with No. 31 Memphis on Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (3-5, 0-0 Big 12) dropped the doubles point to the Tigers (5-2, 0-0 AAC), but bounced back to take three singles matches before ultimately falling in the final singles match for the loss.
“I am still in shock about the doubles match,” coach Dave Borelli said. “It was such a good match and then there were seven unforced errors. We just can’t let those matches slip away. We were up in the sets, but they just competed and played better. It hurts us to not have Millie (Nichols) in the doubles.”
Stefanie Tan and Seda Arantekin picked up the first win for TCU on Sunday as the duo teamed up on court two to take an 8-5 win over Anki Wind and Stefanie Mikesz. Memphis would even the doubles race at the No. 1 position, as the No. 38 ranked doubles pairing of Alyssa Hibberd and Caroline Wegner picked up an 8-5 victory over Sofiko Kadzhaya and Mimi Fotopoulos.
The doubles point came down to court three and Simona Parajova and Monika Sirilova were leading the match 5-4, before Marta Morga and Skylar Kuykendall won the next four points to win the match 8-5 and clinch the doubles point for the Tigers.
Memphis took a 2-0 lead in the match with a win at No. 4 singles, before No. 52 Tan got TCU on the board by picking up a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 99 Mikesz. The Frogs kept the ball rolling with Parajova winning on court two with a 7-6(7), 6-1 downing of Kuykendall.
TCU took its first lead of the match when Arantekin won on court five when she clinched the third-set tiebreaker and won 7-5, 0-6, 7-6(5) over Wind. The Frogs could not hold onto the lead, as Memphis claimed wins on courts six and three to win the match 4-3.
TCU will stay home and host Metroplex rival SMU on Friday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m., on the Tut Bartzen Varsity Tennis Courts.
