Frogs Fall Victim To Upset
Feb. 22, 2005
Fort Worth, Texas - The No. 14 TCU women's tennis team dropped its first match of the year this afternoon, 5-2, to No. 24 Baylor at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Frogs two points came with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles.
"Baylor came out and played really well today," said Head Coach Dave Borelli. "They are a team that puts the ball in play day in and day out. They just played a little better than we did and they came away with the victory."
All seemed well in doubles as No. 27 Story Tweedie-Yates and Ana Cetnik jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the No. 1 doubles spot. However, Daniela Covello and Zuzana Zemenova slowly crept back to tie the match at five all. The Baylor pair then proceeded to pull off the upset when they scored the next three points to win, 8-5.
Helena Besovic and Karla Mancinas evened the score in the quest for the point at line two when they beat Klara Zrustova and Zuzana Cerna, 8-6. In the decisive match, Paige Brown and Andrea Morgado fell behind 7-3 against Iva Mihaylova and Zuzana Krchnakova before rallying to make the score 7-6. However, the Frogs came up just short as the Bear tandem closed out the match on serve to hand TCU its first loss at the doubles point this season.
In singles, Krchnakova and Zrustova extended Baylor's lead with their wins at six and four, respectively. Krchnakova defeated Morgado, 6-1, 6-1, while Zrustrova beat Kewa Nichols, 6-1, 6-4. The losses were the first of the spring for the two Horned Frog freshmen.
The Bears clinched the match at the No. 3 position when Covello topped Cetnik, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. The TCU sophomore was battling an arm injury on the day, which forced her to serve underhand in both singles and doubles.
In the battle of ranked players, No. 57 Zemenova upset No. 10 Tweedie-Yates at the one line. Zemenova escaped the first set 7-6 (4) in the breaker, before beating the senior 6-1 in the second.
The Frogs picked up its two points at the No. 5 and No. 2 spot. Junior Gloriann Lopez got the first TCU point at five when Mihaylova retired the match due to injury. At two, No. 46 Besovic lost the first set, 2-6, before battling back to defeat Cerna, 6-2, 6-3 to win the match.
"This was a test for us to see how we played after we lost the doubles point," said Borelli. "We kind of put to much pressure on ourselves and as a result we fell to a good team. We just need to come back the rest of this week and keep working because it's a long season and we have to use this to make us continue to improve."
TCU will head out of state for the first time this season on Sunday when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., for a match against the No. 55 Golden Hurricanes. The competition will be held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center beginning at 11 a.m.
