FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 26 TCU women's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 14 Baylor on Tuesday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The loss drops the Horned Frogs to 4-4 overall, while improving Baylor's record to 5-4.
"We fought extremely hard tonight," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "We are getting better, but we just wound up on the other end of the stick today."
The Baylor duo of Klara Zrustova and Lenka Broosova kicked off the match with an 8-2 defeat of Kewa Nichols and Nina Munch-Soegaard, before the team of Karine Ionesco and Andrea Morgado countered with an 8-5 victory over Zuzana Zememova and Jessica Zok in the No. 3 slot. With the doubles contest knotted at one, Zuzana Chmelarova and Zuzana Cerna knocked off the No. 3 tandem of Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorka 8-5 to clinch the point.
The Bears would go on to reel off three consecutive singles victories to clinch the match point. Cerna defeated No. 23 Cetnik 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 slot, followed by Iva Mihaylova defeating TCU's Ionesco 6-3, 6-3. The Bears clinched the match when No. 76 Broosova downed No. 60 Munch-Soegaard 7-6, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot.
TCU's Sydorska and Nichols would go on to provide bright spots for the Frogs. Sydorska defeated Baylor's Zok in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to win her sixth consecutive match. With the match split at one win each, Nichols defeated Chmelarova in a second set tiebreaker, 11-9, in front of an energized crowd.
The Frogs will now begin a stretch of six consecutive road contests, starting with Oklahoma on March 1 at 1 p.m.
