TCU Downed by North Texas, 4-3
March 5, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 70 TCU women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 midweek matchup against regional rival North Texas on Wednesday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
This was the fifth consecutive match for the Horned Frogs (5-7), who are playing short handed, where the win was decided on the final singles court and the Mean Green (5-6) proved to have the final push needed to win the match.
“Today was a tough loss for our team,” coach Dave Borelli said. “Sofiko (Kadzhaya) has been playing very well for her first year with our team, but just came up against an opponent with a little more experience today. I am confident that this team will bounce back from this and keep working hard.”
The match began with North Texas quickly picking up a win on court three in doubles action. The Mean Green finished off the match with Alexis Thoma and Kamilla Galieva taking a tiebreaking victory on court two over Simona Parajova and Sofiko Kadzhaya. Seda Arantekin and Stefanie Tan were leading on court one 7-5, before the match was called.
North Texas upped the score to 2-0 with a win on court six in singles, before No. 53 Tan and Parajova posted straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions, respectively, to tie the match back up at 2-2.
The lead went back to the Mean Green after a win on court five, but Arantekin would even the score with a 6-2, 6-4 take down of Galieva on court three.
The final decision was left to court four and newcomer Kadzhaya controlled the match at the beginning and recorded a 6-1 win in the first set. Agustina Valenzuela rebounded with a 6-3 set two win and the two battled till the end in set three, but Valenzuela proved to have the upper hand and took down the freshman 7-5 in the final set to give North Texas the win.
TCU will continue to stay at home for the next three matches beginning with a double header on Tuesday, Mar. 11 with Louisiana Tech at 10 a.m., and then North Florida at 3 p.m. The Frogs will then open Big 12 play by hosting Texas on Friday, Mar. 14 at 2 p.m.
