TCU Hooks the Horns
March 14, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas – Under strong play at both doubles and singles, the TCU women’s tennis team upended No. 22 Texas, 5-2, in its Big 12 opener on Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center
The win over the Longhorns (5-9, 0-1 Big 12) was the second upset victory in a row over a nationally ranked opponent for the Horned Frogs (8-7, 1-0 Big 12), as the team is now riding a three-match winning streak.
TCU took control of the match from the start and fought hard to win the doubles point over Texas. Monika Sirilova and Simona Parajova were the first Frogs to pick up a win, as the duo took down Pippa Horn and Juliana Gaijic 8-6 on court three.
The final point would not come easy for TCU, as Mimi Fotopoulos and Sofiko Kadzhaya had to go to a tiebreaker with Ratnika Batra and Neda Koprcina to pull out the victory. The duo had two match points, but had to go the extra length to finish off the tiebreaker with a score of 9-7 to secure the doubles point for the Frogs.
Sirilova brought her momentum from her doubles win into her singles match, as the senior was the first done with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court six over Lana Groenvynck. Texas got on the board with a win on court three and evened the score when No. 18 Breaunna Addison defeated No. 53 Stefanie Tan 6-3, 6-3 on court one.
Even with the match tied, TCU did not even blink and won the final three matches to take out the Longhorns 5-2. Seda Arantekin put TCU up 3-2 with a 6-3, 7-5 downing of Koprcina on court four, before Sofiko Kadzhaya clinched the team victory with a 7-6(3), 6-2 defeat of Horn at No. 5 singles.
Parajova was the final competitor and had to come back after dropping the first set to take out Elizabeth Begley. Parajova battled to a 7-6(5) set two victory, before finishing off the match with a 10-6 win in set three. This was the junior’s team-leading 11th victory this season, as the Slovakia native has yet to lose on court two with an 11-0 record in dual matches.
TCU will continue Big 12 play by hitting the road for the next four matches. The Frogs will first travel to Stillwater, Okla., to take on Oklahoma State on March 21 at 5 p.m., before heading to Norman, Okla., to take on Oklahoma on March 23 at noon. TCU will wrap up the road trip by traveling to Ames, Iowa to face Iowa State on March 28 at 3 p.m., and Morgantown, W.Va., to play West Virginia on March 30 at 9 a.m.
