SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In a rematch of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships finale, the No. 32 TCU women's tennis team saw an early 2-0 advantage vanish as the Horned Frogs dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 71 UNLV at the Aztec Tennis Center Saturday. With the loss, TCU drops to 7-9 for the season and 1-1 in MWC action.

UNLV has been the perpetual thorn in the side of the Purple and White, winning the last two meetings between the squads and handing TCU three of its four losses in league play since joining the MWC in 2005-06. Before Saturday, the Frogs only regular season loss against a conference opponent transpired at BYU in 2007.

The Frogs swept the doubles point to begin the afternoon. Sophomore Maria Babanova and freshman Gaby Mastromarino claimed the first win, 8-4, over the Rebels’ Rumyana Terzieva and Nikol Dimitrova, while freshman Kayla Duncan and sophomore Katariina Tuohimaa clinched the tally with an 8-5 victory over Alisa Razina and Adrienn Hidvegi. The 28th-ranked TCU duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska completed the sweep with a 9-8 win over Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams.

Sophomore Idunn Hertzberg gave TCU a 2-0 advantage with her opening singles win over Terzieva, 6-2, 6-2. The Oslo, Norway has been on a roll as of late, riding a five-match winning streak, moving her season record to 7-4 in singles action.

UNLV quickly stormed back into the match, capturing wins on Nos. 2 and 4 postions. Tuohimaa was disposed of by Dimitrova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, while Mastromarino ran out of gas against Hidvegi, falling, 7-5, 6-4.

From the No. 3 slot, Duncan gave the Frogs’ a 3-2 advantage and moved them one singles win away from claiming the match. The Winston-Salem, N.C., product earned her second victory in as many days with a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Williams.

With the match within reach, TCU’s seniors couldn’t close out the Rebels, allowing UNLV to bounce back on the last two courts for the 4-3 win. Harkins dropped a pair of tiebreakers against No. 123 Nedeltcheva to fall 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3).

Making an appearance in the Frogs’ singles lineup for the first time since March 8, Sydorska battled back from losing the first set, 6-0, to force the only three-set match of the day, but Razina was too much for the Lviv, Ukraine native in the end, clinching the match with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 decision.

TCU will return to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center this week in preparations of hosting a trio of MWC opponents, Utah, BYU and New Mexico, on April 3-5.
