Women's Tennis Squeaks Out 4-3 Win Over SMU

DALLAS, Texas - The 58th-ranked TCU women's tennis team battled with Metroplex-rival SMU to a 4-3 victory on Tuesday evening at the Haggar Tennis Stadium on the SMU campus. The Frogs' second straight win evens their record at 9-9 overall, 2-1 against Conference USA opponents, while SMU moves to 14-9 for the season. The TCU road victory was the first of the year.
TCU was able to capture the ever-important doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. The Frogs' 51st-ranked duo of junior Paty Aburto and senior Rosa Perez earned an 8-5 win at the first position over Nadia Vaughan and Kit Carson. The second TCU tandem of junior Saber Pierce and sophomore Karla Mancinas defeated Jenny Langer and Allison Leuszler, 8-4.
The two teams split the singles matches with TCU winning at Nos. 1, 3, and 5. Aburto, ranked No. 89 and playing No. 1, defeated Kit Carson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. At the fifth spot, Mancinas was able to top Lynsie Jones, 6-4, 6-2.
The match came down to the third set of the No. 3 singles contest between Pierce and Svetlana Kouzmenko. Pierce took the first set, 6-4, and Kouzmenko the second, 6-3. The two battled in the final set before Pierce came out on top 6-4 to give TCU the match.
The Frogs head to New Orleans for the 2003 Conference USA Championship this weekend. Action begins on Saturday, April 12 and runs through Tuesday, April 15. Tulane is hosting this year's Championship.
