FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 52 TCU women’s tennis team could not complete a season sweep of No. 22 Texas on Friday afternoon, as the Horned Frogs fell 4-2 in the second round of the Big 12 Tennis Championships at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
After pulling off the upset victory in conference play earlier in the spring, the Horned Frogs (12-12) looked to continue the trend and defeated the Longhorns (12-11) in doubles action, but could not finish out the match in singles, as Texas won four singles matches to move into the semifinals tomorrow.
TCU started the match by dominating in the doubles matches and quickly taking the doubles point. Returning for the Frogs for the first time in over a month, Mimi Fotopoulos paired up with Simona Parajova to record the first doubles victory on court three with an 8-2 victory over Pippa Horn and Juliana Gajic
A retirement by TCU on court four put Texas on the board for the first time in the match, as the Longhorns would go up 2-1 with Lina Padegimaite downing Millie Nichols 6-3, 6-0 on court six.
Simona Parajova recorded the final point of the match for the Frogs by defeating No. 120 Begley for the second time this season. Parajova was strong from the beginning of the match and took out her opponent in straight sets for her 23rd victory this season. The junior finishes the regular season with five wins over ranked opponents.
No. 15 Addison put Texas ahead 3-1 with a straight-set win over No. 38 Tan and the Longhorns sealed the win just moments later as No. 104 Ratnika Batra defeated Sofiko Kadzhaya 6-3, 6-4 on court four.
TCU now awaits word of a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Championship First and Second Rounds, which will be held May 9-11 at selected campus sites.
