New Orleans, La. - The No. 18 TCU women's tennis team defeated No. 44 LSU, 4-1, on Friday night in the opening round of the Divison I NCAA Women's Tennis Championships. The match was played under the lights at Tulane's Goldring Tennis Center after thunderstorms pushed the start time back three and a half hours. The Frogs will now face the Green Wave, who topped Southeastern Louisiana, 4-0, in second round action on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.

"I am very pleased with the outcome of today's match as it was great to beat a solid SEC team," said Head Coach Dave Borelli. "I thought that it was key for us to play well in doubles and I think we really set the tone early on today. This match will help our confidence and I really think tomorrow is going to be a great match for us."

The victory propels TCU into the Round of 32 for the third time in the history of the program. In 2001 and 2002, the Frogs won their opening match before falling to Texas on both occasions. TCU has never advanced to the Sweet 16.

The Frogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Tigers after they won the highly contested doubles point. Helena Besovic and Kewa Nichols won their third match of the season when they topped Amanda Mang and Staten Spencer at the two position. The pair fell behind 2-0 to start the match, but they settled in to take a 4-3 lead before winning 8-5.

Seniors Paige Brown and Karla Mancinas clinched the point at the three line as they topped Camila Caliari and Marina Chiarelli, 8-5. The duo has now won five straight matches to improve their overall record to 13-1 this season. On court one, No. 29 Ana Cetnik and Story Tweedie-Yates were on top 7-4, before the match was stopped when the point was clinched.

The Tigers evened the match at one with a victory at the three spot in singles. In a battle of two freshmen, Spencer topped Nichols in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The defeat drops Nichols' record to 23-13 this season.

Freshman Andrea Morgado put the Frogs back on top with her straight set win at the five line. Morgado tallied her 24th win on the season as she won 6-1, 6-2 over LSU's Tucker. At the two position, No. 40 Besovic easily defeated Seaman, 6-1, 6-2 to pick up her team-leading 34th victory.

No. 14 Tweedie-Yates clinched the match with her 17th straight victory at the one position to improve her overall record to 33-4. The Conference USA Player of the Year and ITA Southwest Region Senior Player of the Year handled Mang, 6-1, 6-1 to send the Frogs into the second round of the championship.

TCU (21-4) will face No. 16 Tulane in the Round of 32 on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. The winner of the match will move on to the Sweet 16, which will be held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., on May 19-22.
