Frogs Notch Two Victories At NCAA Singles Championship

Athens, Ga. - Senior Story Tweedie-Yates and junior Helena Besovic both advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship today at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The victories are the first by a Horned Frog player at the Championship in 17 years.

Besovic, a junior from Sarajevo, Bosnia, notched the first victory on the day when she defeated the highest ranked opponent of her career as she topped No. 11 Daniela Bercek of UCLA in straight sets. Bercek entered the match as one of the eight 9-16 seeds. Besovic opened with a victory in the tiebreaker by the count of 7-6(2). In the second, the TCU junior closed out the match, 6-4. The victory is Besovic's sixth straight and it improves her record to 36-9 this season.

No. 14 Tweedie-Yates, who is also one of the eight 9-16 seeds, survived an opening round scare when she topped Anca Anastasiu of Southern California in three sets. The Conference USA Player of the Year stormed out to claim the first set 6-2, but she fell in the second to the No. 53 player in the rankings, 7-5. In the deciding set, Tweedie-Yates eliminated the USC sophomore by the count of 6-4. The victory extends the TCU senior's winning streak to 19 matches and it improves her overall record to 35-4.

Both players will return to the court on Tuesday morning. Besovic will face off against No. 17 Audra Falk of Vanderbilt at 9 a.m. (CST). Falk advanced out of the first round when she topped Lejla Hodzic of Stanford, 6-1, 6-4. Meanwhile, Tweedie-Yates will go up against No. 45 Maja Kovacek of New Mexico at 10:30 (CST). Kovacek topped Iryna Tkachenko of Oklahoma State in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.

Tweedie-Yates and sophomore Ana Cetnik will also open play in the doubles draw at 2 p.m. (CST). TCU's No. 29 ranked duo will face No. 16 Karin Coetzee and Alexandra Hirsch of Wake Forest.
