Frogs Win Three Titles Over the Weekend

Sept. 19, 2004

The TCU women's tennis team recorded three victories on the first weekend of competition this season. Senior Story Tweedie-Yates won the Matamoros Tournament, freshman Andrea Morgado won the Flight A Draw at the North Texas Invitational and Morgado teamed with senior Paige Brown to win the Doubles Flight A Draw in Denton.

Tweedie-Yates picked up her first career win in a professional tournament when she defeated Melissa Torres of Mexico 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Torres has been ranked as high as No. 250 on the WTA circuit.

"This was a really good win for Story and for the TCU program," said Head Coach Dave Borelli. "To have a player win a professional event during her time in school makes her a pioneer in our program."

Junior Helena Besovic dropped her first match of the season when she ran into Caroline Walter of Baylor in the semifinals of the Baylor Invitational. Walter, the No. 31 player in the ITA Fall Rankings, defeated Besovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a hard fought match.

"This match was a heartbreaker," explained Borelli. "Helena had some opportunities to win some points, but it just wasn't going her way. Overall, we are so excited by Helena's abilities in singles and in doubles. She is an excellent team player that we're lucky to have on our team."

In Denton, freshman Andrea Morgado claimed the title in the Flight A Singles Draw with a win over Ina Wieding of Tyler JC 6-0, 6-4. While in the final of the Flight A Singles backdraw, Brown fell to Noelia Furno of McNeese State 6-3, 6-2.

Morgado and Brown teamed up to claim the top honor in the Doubles Flight A Draw. The pair defeated Wieding and Ame Blacketer of Tyler JC 8-4. In the third place match in the Doubles B Draw, Alexandra Allin and Molly Purdy fell to La.-Lafayette's Cecilia Varela and Kimmie Lyles 8-5.

"Every Frog in the tournament competed hard and we ended up with great results in the Flight A singles and doubles," said Assistant Coach Jefferson Hammond. "This weekend will really help us to build our confidence as we continue our fall season."

The Frogs will return to action next weekend at the Rice Tennis Classic in Houston.
