AUSTIN, Texas - TCU's Monika Sirilova and Millie Nichols kicked off play at the UT Women's Longhorn Invitational on Friday with Sirilova advancing in her bracket.
The junior from Slovakia, who is in her first year of competition for the Horned Frogs, claimed a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Tulane's Caroline Magnusson in the "white" bracket round of 16. Sirilova faces SMU's Hristina Dishkova on Saturday morning.
Nichols dropped a tough 7-5, 6-3 decision to SMU's Aleksandra Malyarchikova in the round of 16 in "orange" bracket play. Malyarchikova was the No. 3 player for the Mustangs' 2011 team that went to the NCAA Sweet 16.
"I was really happy with the way both of the girls played," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "Monika played very well and Millie's match could have gone either way against a very tough opponent. It's just about getting experience and getting some matches under our belts."
TCU's players return to action Saturday. Sirilova is in quarterfinal action in her bracket, while Nichols will compete in the consolation draw of her bracket.
