Sept. 26, 2016

Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU women’s tennis team captured three tournament titles between the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas and the Little Rock Invitational in Little Rock, Ark., this past weekend in the team’s second weekend of action during the fall season.

Senior Caroline Wegner won two titles by taking the singles crown in Flight B in Little Rock, while also capturing the doubles title with partner Seda Arantekin. In singles action, Wegner posted wins over opponents from Arkansas, Kansas and West Virginia. The No. 18 ranked pair of Wegner and Arantekin also easily handled all three opponents in doubles to cruise to the crown.

Donika Bashota and Olaya Garrido-Rivas were in action at Rice as the duo paired up for the first time this season to win the doubles title in Houston. The duo opened the weekend by upsetting the No. 27 ranked pair of Allie Michaud and Taylor Russo of Auburn, 6-3, before defeating a pair from Alabama and a final 7-5 victory over another Auburn duo to take the title. No. 57 Bashota also scored another ranked victory by downing No. 120 Julia O’Loughlin of Denver, 6-2, 6-2, in singles action.

Quotes from the Weekend
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
“Coming away with three titles this weekend is result of a lot of hard work from the entire team, great leadership from our seniors and a belief and confidence that's been building the last five months. Donika and Olaya paired together for the first time to show they are one of the best doubles teams in the country, while Seda and Caroline proved they still have the chemistry and capability of being a top 10 team.

“I was really impressed with Caroline's overall tournament. Her commitment to a positive attitude regardless of her opponents play or score was the best I've seen and her intensity and fight was phenomenal when it mattered most. I'm really happy for her. Seda and Sofiko were able to go 2-1, with their only losses coming to highly ranked opponents, and Alexis was able to get back to her fighting spirit by gutting out a 6-2, 4-1 deficit to win 6-2 in the third.

“Little Rock Country Club and the area members were first class hosts and we were grateful for the support we had throughout the tournament. We look forward to being back there next year and already miss our little fan base there in Little Rock. We are miles ahead of where we've been in the past. I'm really encouraged about where we are and believe we are set up strongly for a great showing at the ITA All-American Championships this upcoming week."
