Besovic Keeps On Winning In California

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Junior Helena Besovic won a pair of matches on Sunday at the Riviera/ITA Pre-Qualifier at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Besovic now needs to win only one more match to advance to the Qualifying Tournament that begins on Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

In her opening match on the day, Besovic, the No. 15 seed, defeated Jessica Simosa of Kansas State 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 64. Later in the day, the junior from Sarajevo, Bosnia, followed it up with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the Round of 32 over Penn's Yulia Rivelis.

"I have been really impressed by the wins that Helena has garnered so far," said Head Coach Dave Borelli. "Rivelis has been one of the better players in the country and with the win, Helena is really beginning to establish herself as one of the top players on the national scale as well."

Tomorrow in the quarterfinals, Besovic will take on Alex McGoodwin of UCLA at 9 a.m. (PST). McGoodwin defeated the No. 6 seed Yanik Dullens of Denver in the Round of 32 7-6 (4), 6-1 to advance.

In doubles action, Besovic and senior Karla Mancinas fell in the Round of 32 to Jamie Piesel and Valerie Vladea of Northwestern 8-5.
