Women's Tennis Opens Play at ITA Regionals

WACO, Texas – TCU’s women’s tennis team kicked off play at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships on Friday with three staying alive in singles on the courts of Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center.

Three of the four Horned Frogs who received byes in the Round of 128 won their opening matches in the round of 64. Stefanie Tan, Simona Parajova and Olivia Smith all made it through to Saturday’s Round of 32.

Tan, the No. 56 in the ITA singles rankings, claimed a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s Maider Martin. No. 87-ranked Parajova followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 win of her own over UTEP’s Gabriela Vazquez.

Smith added a 6-4, 6-4 downing of Elena Fayner of SMU. TCU’s Kelsey Sundaram slipped in the round of 128, while Millie Nichols fell in the round of 64. Sundaram and Nichols will compete in the consolation draw.

Both of TCU’s doubles teams in the event, Nichols and Smith, as well as Sundaram and Tan, received byes in the opening round. The doubles portion of play opens tomorrow and singles play continues.
