Parajova and Tan into Semis at Regionals
Oct. 19, 2013
"I am really proud of Simona and Stefanie," coach Dave Borelli said. "We play in a really tough regional with Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor and all those good schools in there, so it is kind of exciting to get two kids into the semifinals."
Parajova continued her streak of not dropping a set by winning a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Elizabeth Begley of Texas Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals.
Tan had a tougher battle to the semifinals and had to go to three sets to defeat Victoria Kisialeva of Baylor 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. The Singapore native was leading in the first set 5-1, before dropping the next five points as Kisialeva took her first lead of the set at 6-5. Tan fought back to tie the set at 6-6, but Kisialeva dominated the tiebreaker to take the first set.
Tan did not back down and won the second set 6-3 to send the match into the third set. Tied 3-3 in the third set, Tan won her serve to take the lead and then broke Kisialeva to set up the match win on her serve. The junior won four straight points off her serve to come back and win the match.
"I think Stefanie lost a little bit of her cool in the first set and her strength is being tough, but after that she got her mind back on top," Borelli said. "Being in great physical shape was a big advantage going into the three sets. She is in extremely good shape and I think that was a big difference in the match."
TCU struggled in the morning in the doubles bracket as both duos of Parajova and Tan, as well as Seda Arantekin and Millie Nichols bowed out in the quarterfinals. Parajova and Tan lost to Kisialeva and Blair Shankle of Baylor 8-3, while Arantekin and Nichols fell to Beaunna Addison and Pippa Horn of Texas 8-5.
Parajova and Tan will compete in the semifinals of the singles bracket at Noon tomorrow on the Bernard `Tut' Bartzen varsity courts, with a recap and results available at GoFrogs.com following the completion of the competition.
