Women's Tennis Opens Season Saturday

Head Coach Dave Borelli

Jan. 17, 2014

FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 30 TCU women's tennis team will open its 2014 season on Saturday, Jan. 18 with two home matches against Syracuse and UT Arlington at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. First serve is set with the Orange at 10 a.m., while the match against the Mavericks will begin at 3 p.m.

This will be the second meeting all-time between TCU and Syracuse, with the Frogs holding a 1-0 advantage. TCU took a 6-1 decision in the only meeting between the two teams on Jan. 21, 2012. The Frogs will look to keep it perfect against UT Arlington, as TCU holds a 16-0 record over the Mavericks. The team came away with a 4-2 win a year ago in Arlington.

The Horned Frogs are coming off their ninth appearance in the NCAA tournament in the last 10 years. The team is led by All-American Stefanie Tan, who is ranked No. 30 in the national rankings and No. 3 in the singles regional rankings. Tan is riding a five-match winning streak into the spring season, after posting a 14-4 singles record in the fall campaign.

TCU also returns junior Simona Parajova, who picked up a No. 5 regional ranking in singles, while Tan and Parajova will team up in doubles action. Freshman Seda Arantekin and senior Millie Nichols finished the fall season on a strong note, after winning the Jack Kramer Invitational and are ranked No. 10 in the doubles regional rankings.

The Orange are looking to rebound after losing to No. 59 USF last weekend. Despite winning the doubles point, Syracuse came up short in singles competition by only taking wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Senior Maddie Kobelt leads the Orange and is only 10 victories shy of 100 career wins after going 15-9 in singles and 15-8 in doubles last year.

Sophomore Elizabeth Thoms is the top returner for UT Arlington, as the West Sussex native finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 14-1 and an 8-1 record in the WAC. Newcomer Angeles de los Rios had a strong fall campaign and won the consolation bracket at the USTA/ITA Regional Championship this past fall.
