TCU Athletes of the Week

FORT WORTH, Texas – Derrick Mokaleng of men’s track and field and Donika Bashota of women’s tennis have been named TCU’s Athletes of the Week.

Mokaleng, a sophomore sprinter from Johannesburg, South Africa, had a career day on Friday at the Red Raider Invitational. In the 600 yard, Mokaleng finished in 1:08.18, the second fastest mark in collegiate history. Mokaleng wrapped up the day with a come-from-behind win in the final leg of the 4X400 relay. TCU’s 4X400 relay owns the top two marks in the Big 12 so far this season.

Mokaleng and the track and field return to action this Saturday in Albuquerque, NM, for the New Mexico Team Invitational.

Bashota, a senior from Lidkoping, Sweden, played at the top of the lineup as TCU opened the season 2-0 with two 4-0 victories over Southern Miss and Arkansas State. Against both teams, Bashota won her singles matches in straight-sets paired up with Elizabeth Tedford to get two doubles wins. So far this season, Bashota has nine wins including one against a ranked opponent in singles action and four wins in doubles with one win against a ranked opponent.

Bashota and the women’s tennis team return to action this Friday in Stillwater, Okla., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Frogs will take on Ole Miss in the opening round on at 1 p.m., before facing either Oklahoma State or Arizona State on Saturday.
