FORT WORTH -- TCU has announced that tennis players Facundo Lugones and Mimi Fotopoulos have been named Scholar Athletes of the Month for January.

Lugones could not have had a better start to his spring, winning all nine of his singles matches since the start of 2014. Among those victories was a 6-2, 5-6 (9-11), 6-1 win over 28th-ranked Stephane Piro of No. 14 Florida on Jan. 25 at the ITA National Kick-Off in Gainesville, Fla.

The Buenos Aires, Argentina, native also won the singles title at the NCTC Collegiate Classic in Indian Wells, Calif., on Jan. 19. In the tournament, he posted three victories before defeating San Diego's Uros Petronijevic 6-4, 6-2 in the championship.

Lugones is an economics major.

Fotopoulos opened her spring with a singles and doubles victory in TCU's 7-0 win over Syracuse on Jan. 18. She knocked off Valeria Salazar 6-4, 6-3 while also teaming up with Monika Sirilova to take down Amanda Rodgers and Breanna Bachini 6-4.

The sophomore from Prairie Village, Kan., and Sofiko Kadzhaya topped UC Irvine's Kat Facey and Brooke Shweyer, 6-2, in doubles competition on Jan. 24 in Los Angeles to help TCU to a 4-0 win in the opening round of the ITA National Kick-Off. She also picked up a win over a ranked opponent in a 6-3, 6-3 decision over No. 110 Mara Schmidt of Purdue.

Fotopoulos is majoring in Strategic Communication.
