Preview: Rice & Prairie View A&M

FORT WORTH, Texas – A second straight doubleheader is next up on the slate for the TCU women’s tennis team as they prepare to host Rice and Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The Horned Frogs (4-3) will begin the doubleheader with the Owls (2-1) at 1 p.m., before finishing off the day with the Panthers (0-6) at 6 p.m. Admission is free to both matches and fans in attendance can enjoy free pizza courtesy of Buffalo Bros., served in between doubles and singles action.

TCU Notables
TCU enters the doubleheader after going 2-1 last weekend with sweeps of Texas State and UTRGV and a tough loss to No. 8 Texas Tech, 4-2. The Frogs have now swept four of the five opponents they have faced on the Bernard J. ‘Tut’ Bartzen Varsity Courts and are playing their fourth and fifth straight matches at home this weekend.

In the most recent Oracle/ITA rankings, TCU has three ranked singles players and one ranked doubles team. No. 85 Aleksa Cveticanin leads the way followed by No. 90 Aleksandra Zenovka and No. 117 Marie Norris. Stevie Kennedy paces the team with 14 wins on the season while Zenovka has 12 wins. The No. 43 ranked doubles tandem of Donika Bashota and Elizabeth Tedford are 4-0 on the season with a perfect 3-0 mark in dual matches.

Scouting the Owls
Rice is coming off almost two weeks off after going 1-1 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Owls started the season with a 7-0 victory over Lamar before falling 4-2 to Oregon. Rice rebounded with a 4-0 sweep of Maryland to conclude the weekend. The No. 17 ranked doubles pair of Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang boast the team’s only ranking with a 10-2 mark on the season and a perfect 3-0 record at the No. 1 position. Four owls have double-digit wins in singles action led by Savannah Durkin with 13 while Anna Bowtell has 12 wins. Zhang and Priya Niezgoda round out the team with 11 wins each in singles.

Scouting the Panthers
Prairie View A&M is still looking for its first win of the season as they enter the weekend. The Panthers are led by Constanza Aranguiz with three wins in singles action along with Neharika Rama recording two wins. The duo pair up for two doubles victories while the doubles tandem of Shaddae Findley and Tatiana Lea Ruhl also have two wins on the season.

All-Time Series Records
TCU and Rice will be squaring off for the 39th time in program history with TCU leading the overall series at 26-12. The teams last met in the first round of the NCAA Championship a year ago with the Frogs coming away with a 4-0 win. This will be the first meeting during the regular season since 2013 when Rice claimed a 5-2 victory. Saturday’s match will be the 18th time playing in Fort Worth with the Frogs holding a 12-5 advantage in the series.

Saturday’s match marks the first meeting all-time between TCU and Prairie View A&M.
