Preview: Stanford & Texas A&M

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU women’s tennis team is set for a tough weekend of action as they head to Austin, Texas to take on No. 6 Stanford on Friday, Feb. 16 before returning home to welcome Texas A&M on Sunday, Feb. 18.

The Horned Frogs (6-3) will take on the Cardinal (2-1) at 1 p.m., on Friday at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin and then will face the Aggies (7-1) at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth at 1 p.m., on Sunday. Admission is free to the match against Texas A&M and fans in attendance can enjoy free pizza courtesy of Buffalo Bros., served in between doubles and singles action.

TCU Notables
TCU picked up two wins last weekend in the team’s second straight double-header with a 4-2 victory over Rice to start the day before downing Prairie View A&M, 6-0. The Frogs have now won four straight matches and are 6-1 on the Bernard J. ‘Tut’ Bartzen Varsity Courts. TCU has also picked up the doubles point in six of the seven matches played at home.

In the most recent Oracle/ITA rankings, TCU has three ranked singles players and one ranked doubles team. No. 85 Aleksa Cveticanin leads the way followed by No. 90 Aleksandra Zenovka and No. 117 Marie Norris. Stevie Kennedy paces the team with 14 wins on the season while Zenovka has 13 wins. The No. 43 ranked doubles tandem of Donika Bashota and Elizabeth Tedford are 4-1 on the season with a 3-1 mark in dual matches.

Scouting the Cardinal
Stanford has wins over San Jose State (6-1) and Saint Mary’s (7-0) to start the season but dropped a 7-0 sweep to No. 2 ranked Vanderbilt. Michaela Gordon owns the team’s two highest rankings in singles and doubles as she is checking in at No. 26 in singles with 11 wins this season and at No. 6 in doubles with Emily Arbuthnott with eight wins. Arbuthnott is also ranked in singles at No. 32 and leads the team with 12 wins with Melissa Lord and Caroline Lampl rounding out the rankings at No. 46 and No. 109, respectively.

Scouting the Aggies
Texas A&M started the season 7-0 with five wins over schools from Texas before dropping a 4-3 decision to Rice this week. No. 87 Domenica Gonzalez is the only ranked Aggie and boasts a 10-1 mark on the season with an 8-0 record at the No. 1 spot. Macarena Olivares leads the team with 18 wins in singles action with six of the seven Aggies already having surpassed the double-digit win mark. In doubles, Gonzalez and Eva Paalma own 12 wins on the season with a 3-1 mark at the No. 1 position.

All-Time Series Records
TCU and Stanford will be facing each other for the eighth time in program history and for the third straight season. The Cardinal have won every meeting for a 7-0 record against the Frogs and Friday’s match marks the third time they meet on neutral grounds. Last time the teams faced each other was in the second round of the NCAA Championship last season where Stanford was able to get the 4-2 victory.

TCU and Texas A&M will be facing each other for the 47th time in program history on Sunday and the 21st time in Fort Worth. The series record is all even at 23-23 with the Aggies getting the victory in six of the last seven meetings. Last time the teams met was just a season ago as Texas A&M was able to get the 4-3 win in College Station. TCU last picked up a win in the series in January of 2015 when they scored a 4-2 victory during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
