Pierce Earns C-USA Player of the Week Honors
Feb. 26, 2002
FORT WORTH, Texas - The Conference USA office announced today that TCU sophomore Saber Pierce has been named the Conference USA Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 25. She is the second consecutive women's tennis player to earn the conference honor, as Paty Aburto garnered the honor last week.
A native of Duncanville, Texas, Pierce earned three straight-set wins during the past week while playing No. 3 singles. Ranked 108th in the latest ITA singles poll, Pierce defeated Heather Saluri of No. 61 Oklahoma, 6-4, 6-2, in TCU's 4-3 loss to the Sooners, then picked up wins against Judith Hagedorn (6-3, 6-1) and Analia Longoni (6-2, 6-3) of Rice and Houston, respectively. The 22nd-ranked Frogs defeated Rice, 6-1, and No. 62 Houston, 5-2. Pierce has now won six consecutive straight-set matches, and nine of her 11 wins this spring have been straight-set victories. She has an 11-0 record for the spring after playing only three matches in the fall due to a broken finger.
Pierce teamed with Brenna Shackelford over the weekend to win both matches at two doubles. The duo topped Judith Hagedorn and Annie Goodrich of Rice on Saturday, 8-6, and Jo Keene and Analia Longoni of Houston on Sunday by a score of 8-6.
