FORT WORTH -- Coming off its second win of the spring, TCU's women's tennis team returns to action at noon Saturday when Miami visits the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Hurricanes are ranked No. 3 in this week's Campbell's/ITA Women's Tennis Rankings.
The Horned Frogs (2-5) picked up their second win of the spring last Wednesday with a 5-2 dismantling of previously unbeaten Lamar. Miami is the sixth ranked opponent thus far on TCU's spring schedule.
Federica Denti and Katariina Tuohimaa, TCU's No. 1 doubles duo, has amassed a 5-2 record this spring, including wins against ranked opponents in two of their last three matches. Overall this season, the TCU tandem is 3-2 against teams ranked in the top 80.
Freshman Olivia Smith, who began her college career at Miami, is 5-2 in singles this spring, including wins in each of her last two matches. Smith has played at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions for the Frogs. Additionally in singles, Gaby Mastromarino is 3-2 this spring, while Idunn Hertzberg is 3-3.
Miami comes into Saturday's match with a lofty national ranking and a 10-2 overall record. In their last match, the Hurricanes dropped a 4-3 decision to North Carolina, which snapped a five-match winning streak.
The Canes feature three women ranked in the top-75 of the Campbell's/ITA Singles Rankings, including No. 10 Bianca Eichkorn. She holds an 11-0 record this spring. Kayla Rizzolo is ranked No. 60 and Anna Bartenstein is ranked No. 75.
On the doubles courts, Bartenstein and Eichkorn join to make up the nation's No. 27 doubles duo. The Cane tandem is 10-1 during the spring. Rizzolo and Gariela Mejia are 8-3 at No. 2 doubles for Miami and are ranked 40th in the doubles rankings.
The Frogs are 1-4 all-time against Miami with their only win being a 5-2 decision on March 15, 2002. Saturday's match will mark the third-straight year TCU and the U have hooked it up with Miami claiming a 6-1 win in Fort Worth in 2009 and a 7-0 win in Coral Gables a year ago.
