COLORADO SPRINGS – TCU sophomore Millie Nichols has been named the Mountain West Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Nichols went a combined 4-0 last weekend in singles and doubles, helping the Horned Frogs win the outright MW regular season title with a 6-1 win over New Mexico on Saturday. TCU returned to the courts for a 4-3 triumph over No. 40 Rice on Sunday.
Playing from the No. 4 singles position against Kristin Eggleston of New Mexico, Nichols scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Against Rice’s Kimberly Anicete on Sunday, Nichols was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at No. 5 singles for her fourth-straight singles win.
The Amarillo, Texas, native paired with Olivia Smith for two doubles wins as well, both at the No. 1 doubles position. The tandem won 8-5 over Michael Bezdickova and Maria Sablina on Saturday. On Sunday, Nichols and Smith claimed an 8-4 triumph over No. 33-ranked Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath. The win vaulted the TCU duo to No. 52 in this week’s rankings.
The weekly honor from the Mountain West is the first of Nichols’ TCU career and marks the fourth time TCU has claimed the honor this season. Gaby Mastromarino was the MW Player of the week Feb. 22, Federica Dent was honored March 7 and Olivia Smith picked up the award a week ago.
TCU returns to action April 28 when it opens play in the Mountain West Women’s Tennis Championship. The Frogs earned a first-round bye as the regular season champion and No. 1 seed.
