Women’s Tennis Honored by ITA

May 16, 2017

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU women’s tennis team was honored this week for its continued community service in the Fort Worth area by earning the ITA Texas Region Community Service Award as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

“I am happy for the ladies to receive the award,” head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. “It's not the main reason we do things like this, but it's a nice byproduct and hopefully gives a little encouragement to them in their future life and endeavors to maintain a life of service. What happens when we participate in things in our community is that we are the ones who really are impacted and benefit. We learn a lot and gain much perspective on life. It directly impacts our competition, but deeper than that, our responsibility as humans to love and serve others around us. Our four seniors will move on from here and hopefully invest in the community in which they live and work in the future.”

The 2016 TCU Hal Jay Community Service Award winners, the Horned Frogs spent every Monday for the last year teaching a tennis clinic at Hope Farm. The team recently made their annual visit to Cook Children’s Hospital, while also helping out at Union Gospel Mission by feeding the homeless. During the fall season, the team also spent time at Como Public Parks teaching introductory tennis lessons.

TCU recently wrapped-up the team season by advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the third straight season. The doubles pair of Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Donika Bashota will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship, while Seda Arantekin is a third alternate for the singles championship. The individual portion of the NCAA tennis championships will begin on May 24 at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga.
