FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU rising senior Millie Nichols started off the USTA Pro Circuit’s Fort Worth Pro Tennis Classic with an upset of the top seed in the qualifying bracket. Nichols defeated Samantha Powers 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 Saturday to advance to Sunday’s next qualifying round at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
“Millie is a really talented player,” TCU head coach Dave Borelli said. “She struggled with injuries during the 2013 season, which did not allow her to show how talented she really is. It is great she can play in an event like this and show how good of a player she is.”
Nichols teamed with Olivia Smith at No. 1 doubles for the majority of the 2013 season, seeing the duo finish the year No. 54 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) doubles rankings. She finished the singles season with a 13-13 record, earning four Big 12 wins.
Nichols received a wildcard to get into the qualifying draw of the Fort Worth Pro Tennis Classic. She is looking to be one of eight players to qualify for the 32-player main draw, which begins Wednesday.
Nichols will be in action in the qualifying round of 32 tomorrow when she takes on June Lee. The match begins at 9 a.m. at the Friedman Tennis Center.
