WTEN Preseason Rankings Released
Sept. 13, 2016
FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU women’s tennis team had two singles rankings and one doubles pair earn a spot within the top 20 in the first Oracle/ITA national poll released on Tuesday morning.
Washington State transfer and junior Donika Bashota earned the highest singles ranking for the team and in her career at No. 57, while senior Seda Arantekin checked into the singles poll for the first time in her career at No. 114. Arantekin was also ranked in the doubles poll for the fourth straight season as she and partner Caroline Wegner sit at No. 18.
“The rankings are a great start and puts the ladies in immediate position to achieve some of their goals,” head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. “They're happy about their start but they aren't satisfied and want to keep moving up. We also have a handful of players not ranked that are preparing for a great fall season. I'm confident we could have five to seven players in the rankings at some point this year.”
The selections for the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships were also released with TCU earning a spot in at least one main draw. Arantekin and Wegner were automatically selected for the main draw of doubles, while Bashota earned a spot in the qualifying singles draw. Arantekin will also compete in the pre-qualifying singles portion of the tournament, while sophomore Marie Norris is a first alternate for the pre-qualifying singles draw.
“Having representation in the main draw and qualifying draw of All-Americans is something we want consistency with year in and year out,” Walker said. “It is a reward for the previous year’s body of work and I'm glad we have four going to the first of the three major national championships of the year. Our first two tournaments this weekend and next weekend are all about preparing for this national championship.”
The Horned Frogs are coming off a 2015-16 season where they finished tied for second in the Big 12 and reached their 17th NCAA Tournament. TCU was able to record program win No. 700 last season, as the team returns seven letterwinners from a squad that posted 16 wins during the season with seven of those victories coming over ranked foes.
