MIDLAND, Texas – The TCU doubles tandem of senior Megan Alexander and Kayla Duncan clinched the doubles title at the Racquet Club Invitational Sunday.
“It’s always nice to win the title,” TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. ”I’m really proud of Megan and Kayla in how fearless they played.“
Alexander and Duncan started the day with a victory in the semifinal round against the Rice duo of Varsha Shiva-Shankar and Rebecca Lin, 8-5. The Horned Frog pairing claimed the doubles crown in the finals after dismantling the top-seeded and nationally-ranked (No. 33) Boise State pairing of Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale, 8-1.
“We’ve just gotten used to each other’s game and we played aggressive,” Duncan said. “We took control of the net. Megan is an unbelievable doubles partner and she knows what to do to help me through the match.”
Playing as a team for the first time, the TCU duo went 4-0 during the weekend, defeating tandems from Texas A&M, Rice, Nebraska and Boise State. Alexander was a doubles All-American at the University of Florida as a junior, while Duncan garnered All-MWC doubles honors as a true freshman in 2009. Duncan also garnered the 2009 USTA Clay Court doubles title this summer.
TCU will have five selected players jump to the West Coast to Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the ITA All-American Invitational, starting Oct. 3.
