AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. – TCU women’s tennis senior Olivia Smith and sophomore Stefanie Tan both advanced to the main draw of the Amelia Island $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit Event on Tuesday.
Both Horned Frog players had to win three matches out of the 64-player qualifying draw to advance to the singles main draw, which begins Wednesday morning. Smith and Tan are competing as amateurs at the Pro Circuit Event.
Smith dropped Alexandra Miller-Krasilnikov, 7-5, 6-0 in the first round, before recording a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 triumph over Daria Sharapova in the second round. In her final qualifying match, the Bath, England, native took down Sonja Molnar, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Molnar was a senior at the University of Iowa a year ago and finished the year ranked No. 66 in singles.
Tan won her first round match, 6-1, 6-2, over Anita Safronenka and knocked off Angelina Zhuravleva, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. The Bishan, Singapore, native dropped Kristi Boxx, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the main draw. Boxx was a two-time All-American at Ole Miss.
“They showed a lot of heart and competed really well,” TCU assistant coach Jason Marshall said. “They both played some long matches and were in great shape, plus they’re playing on clay courts and they haven’t had any practice at all on clay. They are developing into great players for our program.”
Smith and Tan look to continue their run at the Amelia Island event tomorrow morning in the singles main draw.
