Frogs Compete in Riviera Pre-Qualifying Tournament

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Women's Tennis team sent three players to compete in the 2002 Riviera Pre-Qualifying Tournament at UCLA. The Pre-Qualifying Tournament winners advance to the qualifying draw to be held Oct. 8-9 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Junior Saber Pierce took on Sarah Gregg of UCLA in the Frogs' earliest match of the day. Pierce fell in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Karla Mancinas played 16th-seeded Katie Granson of Duke, losing 6-0, 6-1.

Senior Rosa Perez earned the Frogs' lone win of the day as she defeated Vlatka Jovanovic of Fresno State in a three-game thriller, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the day's second round, Perez met 14th-seeded Colleen Gray of Washington. Perez fell short in her bid for a second win as Gray took the 6-2, 6-2 victory.

In doubles action, Pierce and Mancinas matched up with the 5th-seeded Gray and Sumantri of Washington. The TCU duo fell in a hard-fought 8-6 loss.

Perez and doubles partner junior Paty Aburto have earned a spot in the Riviera Qualifying draw. They will begin play on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
