FORT WORTH - TCU's women's volleyball team kicked off its 2012 season Saturday as the Horned Frogs topped the TCU alumni team 25-18, 25-10, 25-19 in front of 275 fans at the University Recreation Center.
After rolling through the first two sets, TCU found itself trailing 16-12 midway through the third set after three-straight points for the Alumni. A timeout for the Varsity sparked the Horned Frogs as they rallied to score 12 of the match's next 15 points to score a 25-19 set win and a sweep of the Alumni.
TCU scored 12 times on its serve with freshmen Alexia Heist and Trisha Langley notching four and three aces, respectively. Sutton Sunstrum and Megan Munce added two aces apiece.
Freshman Macy Capen led the Frogs in kills with seven, while Yvonne Igodan, Blaire Pickens and Emily Kirby tallied six kills. Idogan added the lone solo block for the Frogs and was tied with Capen and Sloane Sunstrum for a varsity-high seven points.
For the alumni, Ellen Rehme notched seven kills, while Irene Hester added six kills and eight digs. Rehme and Kristen Hester had a match-high 7.5 points.
Following the Varsity/Alumni match, the Horned Frogs split their squad for a two-set Purple and White match, entertaining the crowd to sets of 25-23 and 25-22 with the Purple winning the first set and White the second.
Sloane Sunstrum led the White with 10 kills, while Pickens added nine. For the Purple, Munce filled her stat line with five kills, 15 assists and 10 digs. Capen and Igodan added seven kills apiece, while Sutton Sunstrum notched five kills and six digs.
The Horned Frogs open the 2012 regular season Aug. 24 against Northern Colorado in Nashville for the Belmont Invitational.
