Sept. 6, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team dropped its first match at home this season with a 3-0 (24-26, 25-27, 15-25) loss to UALR in the championship match of the TCU Nike Invitational on Saturday night at the University Recreation Center.
The teams battled to extra points in the first two sets and the Horned Frogs (5-2) outhit (42-40) and out dug (55-54) the Trojans (5-2), but UALR came up with the clutch plays to steal away the victory from TCU.
Ashley Smith led TCU for the second time in the weekend with eight kills, to go along with one service ace, nine digs and one block for a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Smith finished with 34 kills on the weekend, 2.62 kills per set and 30 digs.
Sutton Sunstrum snagged the other spot for TCU on the All-Tournament Team after notching double-digit digs (18) for the third time in the last four matches. Sunstrum finished with 60 digs on the weekend and 5.00 digs per set.
TCU broke out for a 6-3 lead to open the match after kills from Blaire Pickens, Smith and Mattie Burleson. Kills from the Trojans and a service ace evened the match at 7-7. The teams would tie again at 9-9 before a block from Sarita Mikals and Regan McGuire started a 5-0 run by the Frogs with Smith and Holland notching multiple kills in the stretch.
UALR would respond with a kill from Edina Selimovic that would spark an 8-0 stretch that would give the lead back to the Trojans at 17-14. After back-to-back service errors, kills from Holland and Burleson evened up the set at 18-18. The teams continued to trade points until three straight kills from Mikals gave TCU a set point at 24-22. TCU could not hold onto the momentum, as UALR combined three kills and an error by the Frogs to take the next four points and steal away the set 26-24.
TCU rebounded from the loss for a quick 4-1 lead in the second set with two kills from Holland and a put down from Smith. Errors from the Frogs let UALR take control of the match and take back the lead and stretch out the set to a 15-9 advantage. Out of a TCU timeout, McGuire regrouped from a hitting error to smack down a kill and record two straight solo blocks to close the gap to four at 16-12.
The Frogs continued to force the Trojans into multiple errors and closed the gap off of strong service runs from Trisha Langley and Smith to tie up the set at 23-23. After trading points to bring the score even again at 25-25, two crucial hitting errors by TCU gave UALR the second set 27-25 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Trojans continued to roll into the third set and TCU could not recover after a sluggish start, as UALR won the set 25-15 and completed the sweep for the win.
TCU will hit the road for the second time this season as the team travels to South Bend, Ind., to take part in the Shamrock Invitational on the campus of Notre Dame on Sept. 12-13. The Frogs will take on the host Fighting Irish on Friday at 7 p.m., before facing Northern Iowa and Northeastern at 1 p.m., and 5 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
