TUCSON, Ariz. - TCU's women's volleyball team stretched its winning streak to seven with a 3-1 (9-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-13) win Friday night over host Arizona at the Arizona Invitational inside the McKale Center.
The Horned Frogs improved to 7-1 on the year and have not lost since their season opener. The Wildcats dropped to 4-3. TCU put itself in position to win its second-straight tournament title.
After a difficult first set that saw the Frogs drop a 25-9 decision, TCU bounced back to win three-straight sets, including a 26-24 win in set number two. The dramatic win tied the match at 1 and gave the Frogs the spark they needed for the final two sets.
TCU used four aces in the second set to work its way to the 26-24 win, including three from Alexia Heist. The freshman also added three assists in the set. Megan Munce contributed two kills to go along with seven assists.
Offensively, the Frogs spread it around in the set with three kills coming from Sloane Sunstrum and Stephanie Holland, while Munce and Macy Capen had two each.
The third set was all about the Frog middle blockers as TCU rode Yvonne Igodan and Mattie Burleson for nine of its 14 kills in the set. Igodan tallied six kills and a block, while Burleson put three kills and two blocks on her stat sheet.
TCU held the advantage in digs during the set, 23-20, as Sunstrum and Meghan Horio had five apiece, while Munce, Burleson and Heist added three.
After taking the 2-1 lead, TCU refused to look back and steamrolled the Wildcats in the fourth and deciding set behind four more kills from Igodan. Burleson added an ace, three kills and two blocks as TCU put up a 25-13 set win and 3-1 victory overall.
Munce collected her third-straight double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs. Burleson and Igodan led TCU at the net, collecting five blocks apiece, while Stephanie Holland chipped in four blocks.
The Frogs conclude play at the Arizona Invitational tomorrow against Iona. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m., CST.
