TCU Drops Heartbreaker to SMU, 3-2

DALLAS, Texas - Despite winning the first two frames, the TCU volleyball team could not hold on as SMU stormed back to take the 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-13) victory on Friday night inside the Moody Coliseum in the second match of the SMU Doubletree Invitational.

The Horned Frogs (9-2) gutted out wins in the first two sets against the Mustangs (9-2) hitting a combined .300 and totaling seven blocks, but SMU came on strong in the final three frames as they had five players score double-digit kills and pick up a match-high 91 digs.

Ashley Smith led all players with a season-high 18 kills to go along with a season-high 16 digs to complete her third straight double-double and fourth of the season. Alexia Heist and Kaylee Smith each dished out a season-high in assists with 28 and 25, respectively.

Sutton Sunstrum led the defensive effort with a season-high 24 digs, while Natalie Gower controlled things at the net with seven total blocks.

"I think this was a great volleyball match tonight. Both teams played really hard and I think defense was great on both sides of the net. We have got to get back in the gym and work on some things and this is what the preseason is for. It is to prep you for conference. I think we knew it was going to be a battle tonight and we were battling all night. It was fun match to be a part of and it was not the side we wanted to come out on, but it was a really fun match to be apart of."
